I've spent some time in Japan off and on as my father (remarried gaijin) lives in Kochi. I've been trying to find sites like this, describing motorcycle rides in Japan and was glad to find this particular one. I don't have a bike yet (young, no money) but I definitely plan to do something along these lines.

Nice work taking the time to post all of this, it's a great read!

Re: Japanese Pizza
This is a great website section - there's something very telling about local pizzas. Pizza seems to be ab-used the world over-- or maybe pizza is just a good medium for serving up culture. People seem to think that as long as its bottom is made of dough, you put any meal you want and still sell it as Pizza.
I saw some interesting ones in Berlin as well: lots of tuna, corn favorites there.
Fun to see what they're doing at random places in Asia!

Re: Japanese Pizza
I've had potato, cheddar, and sour cream pizza here in the states (it wasn't bad, but I prefer traditional). Other strange, but common, ingredients are corn, BBQ chicken, ziti pasta, and sauerkraut. I guess once people decided that pineapple was OK, it was anything goes... In fact, my favorite pizza is canadian bacon, pineapple, onions, and jalapeno with spicy marinara. Great site. Some of the pies sounded good, but I can't imagine a sauceless pizza - that's just plain wrong.

i read an article on the back of the local newspaper.. it was about a new type of martial arts in australia and i thought i would see what it was all about. seeing as i had done karate and kick-boxing when i was a few years younger i thought that it might reignite my passion for martial arts. my best friend was interested and i also got another mate to join in.
i went down last night and really enjoyed the introduction lesson.
i was able to meet and relate to several of the other students there and michael dickson was my master. he helped to make the whole experience well rounded, and i have gotten a registration form and i am going down for my second lesson on thursday.
i encourage martial arts enthusiasts to try this form out and it may open your eyes, this is reminiscent of bruce lee.

Re: Japanese Pizza
What's the fuss? Most of these pizzas seem OK to me. Nothing unusual, really, apart from the amount of topping (way too much!) and the Japanese ingredients, that is. Got a wee bit worried when I saw the one with parmesan cheese, I've been taught that no other cheese but mozzarella is accepted on a 'real' pizza, but according to my Italian hubby parmesan works very well with eggplant.

Re: Japanese Pizza
Japan isn't the only place with rotten pizza toppings! I was in London on vacation and staying in a very nice 4 star hotel which was suppose to be known for its food and service. So, I confidently ordered the "combination pizza" from the room service menu. My mistake.

Apparently, the Brits idea of "combination" is anything in the kitchen that isn't nailed down:

Thawed frozen corn (wrinkly texture, dead giveaway)
Canned, blanched green beans
Thawed frozen Peas
Carrots
And saving the best for last.... canned tuna fish in heavey oil.

GAG! At least the beer was good.

Very funny site. Good work.

Have you ever heard of Pizza-la's Funky Egg Pizza?
I didn't catch all the ingredients, but there was, in addition to egg, mayonaise and corn (of course). It came to a grand total of about Y2900, I can't remember. It was cirtainly called "Funky Egg" though.

P.S.
I thought, if you wanted a pizza with no corn, and said "Pizza, no corn" they would interperet it as "piza no corn", or corn pizza.

I was in Japan several times in the Navy. Toward the end of my military time, I was in Yokosuka, where there was a Shakey's just a couple blocks from the main gate. Hey,

I'm sure you're probably pretty sick of talking about your kensei japanese learning software, but i can't get it to work on my system. it loads fine and i get really excited about learning japanese, but then when i try to run the Kana quizzes, the prompts switch to weird olschool ascii txt that doesn't make any sense, kind of like looking at a korean html page without korean text display support. Do i need some other form of ansi.sys to run this properly (not likely as colour support seems built in and not ansi display)? but your software as far as i can tell looks to be an easy way to learn japanese in the comfort of your own home. Flash cards are a great learning tool, it seems asians through ku-mon etc... know this far better than the western world. I'll try it when i get home on win98, but here with win ME it doesn't work. any help would be appreciated.

Re: Japanese Pizza
I'm doing time here in Incheon, South Korea. We get corn on pizza too, which would be okay if the pizza didn't taste like cardboard. Anyway, the weird thing about Korean pizza (er, that is, pi-ja) is that it also comes with a serving each of gherkins, parmesan cheese and unbelievably hot red been paste...

just to let you know, sweet corn is also a popular topping in pizzas in the UK.. or at least in london (where i lived for a year). in fact, it's a popular topping in many things.. another example is as a topping on jacket potatoes (baked potatoes).

Re: Japan by Motorcycle
Hello there Mike,
My name is Sean and I just wanted to say that your entire site is very interesting, especially your motorcycle page. I am a Japanese Studies major. The reason why I found this page is because I am taking a one and half month long vacation in Japan this summer. I plan to travel inside of Japan via motorcycle. So I was doing research on Yahoo! and other search engines when I came across your page. It is very interesting. Since I will be jsut a visitor in Japan, I was going to ask you if you had any information on renting a motorcycle. I realize that you bought one while your stay in Japan, but any insight you have would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot.
Respectfully, Sean

Re: Japanese Pizza
Most of these pizzas sound nice!!! Although I must admit I like seaweed and almost all seafood. In Australia many shops sell pizzas with minced beef, bacon, egg, and BBQ sauce. Now THAT is a bad pizza. (although still maybe not as bad as potato and mayo).
PS what IS this love afair that Japanese seem to have with mayo. They have such a great cuisine, then they have to import a taste for crappy American style mayo.

Hey,I am really shocked to know that NASA's Apollo project was perfectly fake. When I was in U.S., I always thought why American people bought Japanese watches, cameras, and cars even though they had high-tech so that they could go to the moon, but now I am convinced. From the pont of 21st century view, It is hard to believe that they went to the moon and took some memorial pictures and came back to the earth more than 30 years ago! Even now, the spaceshuttle is just rounding the earth 180km above in the sky.
i was dissapointed when I fonud wires to pull up astronaus so that they looked as if they were walking on the moon.

Re: Japanese Pizza
Pizza Story: I was in Osaka and called up a pizza place for an order. I had no menu, so the guy asked "you wanna special?" SURE, the special sounds great.
We couldn't figure out our address (we had just moved in that day to the apartment) so we looked outside the window and said the name of the Love Hotel across the street. "uh...Orange House?" "Ah...," said the pizza man, "Orange House Part Two!" I looked out the window again. Yup, that was the full name. He obviously knew the place well.
So they brought the pizza to our street, we paid, and without opening the box, we took it down to a park to eat it under the cherry blossoms with a few vending-machine beers.
We opened the box, hungry and ready to dig in, and realized that the pizza was WHITE. Potatoes, corn, and mayonnaise. We had never seen anything like it. It looked like someone had spunked all over our pizza. We decided never to order the "special" from the love hotel client again.
(In the end, it turned out it was the Idaho Special -hence the potatoes, but we'll always think of it as Spunk Pizza)

I happened upon your site and thought that it was fantastic.
I enjoyed reading each day and was truly enlightened. I came away from your site with a much better understanding of the culture than any other site I've been to.
I also related on the motorcycle level as I ride and would love to do a very similar trip in Okinawa this fall.
I have two weeks rather than 24 days. I am hoping to rent a motorcycle in Okinawa. I have been researching Okinawa as I have never been there and am very excited to go. I did scope your other sites and thought that they were great.
You have a good sence of humour.
Thanks for sharing your experiences,

Hi, Mike. That pizza is horrible, I know. Two years here and the best I've found is a barely passable, nearly inhaleable pizza for about 25 fricking dollars.
